These paintings represent a continuing exploration of abstract imagery that began with the impulse to doodle. Doodling is a common form of play, but the Surrealists believed it could uncover bits of the unconscious mind. These paintings began as doodles, turned into biomorphic forms, and finally developed into painterly compositions. I didn’t know where these paintings would end up when I started, but I liked playing with the illusion of space and volume, and looking for cohesive imagery. As the work developed, the paintings began to represent abstract symbols of psychic wholeness.
